AUTHOR

Joe Starita is a journalism professor at the University of Nebraska and a former Miami Herald reporter, where he served as New York Bureau Chief and investigative journalist. A Pulitzer finalist, he has long focused on Native American history. His 1995 book The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge won the Mountain and Plains Booksellers Award and was translated into six languages. His later work, I Am a Man: Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice (2009), tells the story of a chief whose act of love sparked a landmark ruling recognizing Native Americans as “persons” under U.S. law. Starita has delivered over 150 talks nationwide and received the NEA’s Leo Reano Award for his advocacy for Native peoples. His most recent project is a biography of Dr. Susan La Flesche, the first Native American doctor in U.S. history, published by St. Martin’s Press.
